The 411 Behind Vicinity Hardware

One of the most convenient features of the Vicinity platform is its hardware. Have we mentioned that it’s completely turnkey? No invasive hardware upgrades, no need to switch your current point-of-sale (POS) system or make tons of space on your counter. You don’t even need a POS system, just a laptop will do!

Once you sign up for Vicinity, your merchant package contains the NFC-enabled Vicinity card reader, member cards, and key fobs. Here’s a bit more about the technology, and why Vicinity is easy to integrate into your checkout process.

What is NFC?

Well first off, it’s an acronym for Near Field Communications and it’s the thing that allows you to pay for your coffee with your smartphone (and collect the Vicinity points to go along with it!).

NFC allows devices to communicate with each other at close range, and typically works when an NFC-enabled device is within 4cm or less of another device, in this case the Vicinity card reader unit. The data transmits by establishing a radio connection from the chip in the users’ card to the Vicinity reader. From there you can instantly access their account and add or redeem points.

It’s the same technology that comes preinstalled in many smartphones including the Samsung Galaxy S series (sorry, no iPhone yet). It also doesn’t require devices to be paired with one another like Bluetooth, and uses significantly less power.

How do I install Vicinity hardware?

So what if you have an existing POS system? It’s easy: just plug in the card reader and the USB key provided in the start-up kit and follow the on-screen instructions. Seriously,, you’re up and running the second it’s out of the box.

Don’t have a POS system or are you working off an analog register like a hipster? Bring your laptop up to the counter and plug the card reader in and you’re up and running. You can run text message campaigns from your laptop and reward customers at the same time!

How do I access my customers’ accounts?

As for your customers, they collect Vicinity points using a compact wallet card that weighs less than a business card, or a key fob if that’s more of their thing. They simply tap their card/fob against the card reader, and the NFC chip give you access to their account – you can see their activity in your store, and other Vicinity they’ve visited in the city.

A turnkey loyalty solution, super easy setup and convenience for your customers. What else could you want from Vicinity?
